Tips for Social Distancing Boredom

This post will be about tips for working from home or being in isolation. What habits are you forming that could be driving you to a healthier future. My top issue is that I notice I cannot step away from electronics.

Each workday before Covid-19, the cubicles around me would hold each other accountable to take lunch even if it is not always the whole hour at a time. This supported time to talk face to face and not scroll endlessly on a social media timeline that never seems to have any more updates.

It has become apparent to me that lunchtime helps improve my workflow because I get my human extrovert need out of the way of being social. So how can I bring that back when there is no one nearby, not even a dog? Even if it’s just a few people or a short conversation or two? I suggest inviting colleagues to chat at your lunchtime to catch up - virtual lunch date! This also can help break up your day.

Another way I use my electronic devices is to listen to podcasts. I love listening to experts or self-identified experts talk about topics they know and love. Allowing me to learn more about things I never knew or expand my knowledge of my passions. Some of my favourite podcasts consist of The Office Ladies - where the ladies behind the characters of Pam and Angela talk about their experience while filming The Office. Ted Talks Daily, is refreshing to have variety. Worst Year Ever podcast, the name describes the subject as it encompasses the 2020 election and now more. Additionally, I enjoy the PTI: Parton the Interruption podcast where I get the previous days' sports report. Finally, for anyone who follows the Bachelor franchise check out Game of Rose as they break down the latest season as it happens. Who was your season MVP? Each week we find out who their player of the game is.

Without an animal, this next task may appear dull, naturally going outside is a great way to get fresh air and break away from the hollow walls surrounding you. Taking a few minutes each day might seem like a minimal task that won't have any effect on your day, but you will be surprised how nice and mentally stimulating it is to break that barrier and explore the great outdoors. Adding this to your day can also create a needed structure that can help you sleep better and not force you to break a sweat compared to working out. Throwback to nature walks with my dog.

How else do you stay productive in this time of uncertainty or increase your workflow? Remember we are only as weak as our weakest teammate. We can only beat Covid-19 if we all work together.

P.S. I would also like to thank all the front line staff who are keeping our essential services open. We cannot do it without you nor imagine what you are going through. Thank you!
